"' You can certainly crush Serbia,1 I replied, ' if you are left alone to do it but even in that case you will be committing suicide. " The Ambassador seemed shocked by the word ' suicide,' and asked whether I thought Austria-Hungary so weak as not to be able to deal with a little people of three or four millions. " I answered that I was too good a friend of Austria to help her to commit suicide.
Serbia must be punished but if the press will give the lead, British public opinion will remain friendly to us, and the conflict may be localized.' It is impossible for us longer to tolerate Serbian provocation. "' I wish to appeal to you as a friend of Austria to use your influence in the British press in order that the position of Austria-Hungary in this crisis may be rightly understood. It is inseparable from the history of the Great War but I venture to reproduce from the Edinburgh Review of October 1917, an account of a conversation which I had with the former Austro-Hungarian Ambassador in London, Count Albert Mensdorff, on July 20, 1914, three days before the Austro-Hungarian ultimatum was addressed to Serbia. The history of the death-struggle of the ancient Monarchy cannot be recorded here. It stood and must, for the present, stand as an approximately accurate account of the Hapsburg Monarchy as it was, or as it seemed to be, before it committed suicide by declaring war on Serbia at the end of July 1914. In the Preface to the Third Edition I wrote that, since the Second Edition was issued, " there has happened much to render necessary the use of the past tense not only in regard to the late Heir Presumptive, the Archduke Francis Ferdinand, and his wife, the Duchess of Hohenberg, who were assassinated at Sarajevo on June 28, but to suggest doubt whether the past tense may not soon have to be used in regard to the Hapsburg Monarchy itself." In these circumstances I made no change whatever in the text of the book.
The First Edition of this book, published in October 1913, was followed by a Second in May 1914 and by a Third in September of the same year.
